F1 Dutch Grand Prix 2022 result: Highlights and analysis as Verstappen takes fourth straight victory in action-packed race at Zandvoort (2023)

World drivers championship leader Max Verstappen took his fourth Formula One race in succession at an action-packed Dutch Grand Prix as he continues to edge ever closer to another world title.

During a chaotic race which saw a late safety car close the pack together with less than ten laps to go, Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on the restart to claim the 30th race victory of his career so far.

The win also sees him extend his lead at the top of the world drivers championship to 109 points over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with just seven races left of the 2022 season.

Just behind Verstappen, George Russell finished in P2, the joint-best result of his F1 career to date, as his decision to strap on a set of soft tyres under the late safety car proved pivotal as he dashed past Hamilton a few laps later.

Another late overtake on Hamilton saw Leclerc round out the podium places despite struggling with pace early on in the race.

Hamilton, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll rounded out the points positions during an enthralling Dutch Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Sainz was on course for a higher finish after finishing the race P5, though the FIA deemed his release from the pitlbox under safety car conditions to be unsafe and thus, the Spaniard received a five-second penalty.

Verstappen heading to the Italian Grand Prix in stunning form

Even though he didn't have it all his own way around Zandvoort, Max Verstappen powered through to claim another vital win at the Dutch Grand Prix - his fourth in-a-row as he closes in on a second successive world drivers championship title.

Now sat 109 points clear of Charles Leclerc at the top of the standings, Verstappen heads to the Italian Grand Prix next weekend in scintillating form.

This time around in Zandvoort he had led from pole position for much of the race before Lewis Hamilton assumed the lead due to a late safety car.

With the home crowd on edge, the Dutchman got the perfect exit off the final corner after the safety car restart to retake the lead heading into corner one which he held until the end of the race to send the majority of the 109,000 spectators at the event into raptures.

Mixed emotions for Mercedes

Whilst it seems a good result on paper that Mercedes pair George Russell and Lewis Hamilton ended the Dutch Grand Prix in P2 and P4 respectively, it couldn't really be further from the truth for the latter.

That's because Hamilton has resumed the race in the lead after the late safety car, though his team's decision to put him onto a set of medium tyres rather than softs cost him extremely dear on the restart.

First Verstappen pounced with ease into the first corner of the restart before both teammate Russell and Leclerc later overtook the former world champion who let off multiple expletive-charged tirades at his constructor via the team radio.

It'll likely be a rather frosty debrief for Mercedes and Hamilton after the Dutch Grand Prix given some of his comments..

F1 Dutch Grand Prix 2022 live updates, highlights from Zandvoort

CHEQUERED FLAG:Verstappen wins the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix!!!It's four wins in a row for the flying Dutchman for the first time in his F1 career. He now has one hand on the world drivers championship trophy for a second consecutive year!

What an incredible race that was! 😵

Lap 69: It's more bad news for Sainz who has now received a five-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pitlane under the safety car. As it stands, he wouldn't even record points this race.

Lap 66: And now it's Leclerc's turn to overtake Hamilton and jump up into the podium spots. This will be very tough to take right now for the former world champion.

Lap 64:During that restart Sainz also overtook Perez into corner one with a lovely move all the way around the outside. Out front, Verstappen pumps in the fastest lap of the race and already holds a 2.3 second lead over Hamilton.

Hold on, down the back straight Russell jumps Hamilton and the pair nearly collide. Wow, that was close as Hamilton launches a huge rant at his team down the radio. How quickly things can change in Formula One, eh?!

Lap 61:The safety car is in and Verstappen leads once again!!! He gets a lovely exit out of the final corner and easily gets past Hamilton heading into corner one. The Dutch crowd go absolutely wild.

Lap 59: This is absolute chaos in the pitlane as the decision is made that cars must past through given where Bottas stopped. Sainz nearly clatters into Alonso as it all kicks off.

SAFETY CAR: Bottas comes to a stop on the start\finish straight and the full safety car is out! Verstappen pits for a soft set of tyres but both Mercedes cars stay out and now Hamilton leads the race!

Lap 56: Hamilton sets the fastest lap of the race and now sits just 11 seconds behind Verstappen. That seems a lengthy gap but the time is continuing to fall.

Lap 53: 'That VSC has stuffed us' says a disgruntled Hamilton over team radio and you can only agree given that he was flying before that interruption. That stoppage came at the perfect time for Verstappen and Red Bull.

Lap 49: The front runners are in under the slower conditions with Verstappen putting on a set of hards and the chasing Mercedes drivers coming out on mediums. Leclerc is down to P4 after the stops as Ferrari's misery looks set to continue here in the Netherlands.

Lap 48:The virtual safety car is out! Tsunoda comes in, spends an absolute age in the pitlane, comes back onto the track and then is forced to stop in sector one because of trouble in his car.

That could have saved Verstappen's victory this weekend?

LAP 48/72

Tsunoda comes back in to the pits for running repairs before coming out again and immediately encountering problems again. He's parked up at the side of the track.

Lap 45: Tsunoda has pulled up at the side of the track complaining that his tyres aren't fitted but his team reckon that all his tyres are fine. Offfftttt that seems like an embarrassing blunder of the face of it.

Lap 44: This race is ebbing and flowing for now with few overtakes to speak about. The result basically all rests on when Verstappen pits and if he has enough time to chase down Hamilton and Russell to take another race victory.

Lap 39: Russell now gets Perez just one lap later and moves up into P4 as the Mexican's tyres are starting to go off here.

This is developing into a very interesting race now as the Mercedes pair are beginning to hunt down Leclerc in P2.

Lap 38:Hamilton gets Perez on the outside of corner one but wait, Vettel is out of the pitlane and straight into the action. The German driver completely blocks off the Mercedes star and Perez very nearly gets him back into corner two.

Lap 36:Hamilton goes for a move on Perez into corner one but the Mexican slides a bit and hampers the British driver's move. That was very, very close to a big collision.

Lap 33:Russell is also now into the pits so it's as you were at the top as Verstappen leads from Leclerc. Hamilton is absolutely flying on the hard tyres behind however and could easily take the victory this afternoon at this rate.

Lap 30: In response to that Verstappen overtake, Hamilton dives into the pitlane to strap on a set of hard tyres. That's an early call, though he will easily get to the end of the race but how quickly will those hards warm up to optimum temperature? Only time will tell..

Lap 27:Verstappen gets an unbelievable exit out of the final corner and gets Russell at the first corner around the outside. The DRS pull down that straight is proving massive today!

Lap 24:A quick recap of this race so far then as Hamilton leads from Russell and Verstappen.

The Mercedes pair are yet to pit but both look to be on a one-stop strategy which could work out to be a golden decision come the end of this race.

Lap 20: Verstappen responds by pitting which means that Hamilton now leads the Dutch Grand Prix from Russell.

Lap 18: Leclerc pits and thankfully his stop is lightyears better than teammate Sainz for Ferrari fans everywhere. That means that it's currently a P2 and P3 Mercedes lock out as they started on the medium tyres.

Lap 15:All of a sudden Verstappen has opened up a 3 second lead over Leclerc as he pushes on before his first pitstop. Meanwhile in the pits it's an absolute disaster for Ferrari and Sainz who is stuck there for 12 seconds and is jumped by Perez behind who then runs over a wheel gun in the process. Thankfully for the Mexican driver it doesn't look like that's damaged his car.

Lap 12: For the second lap running Alonso overtakes an AlphaTauri car and gets past Tsunoda at corner one. Some soft tyre runners are already in the pits, that's very early.

Lap 10: Further down the pack, Alonso finally darts past Gasly to claim P12 and move closer towards the points.

Lap 8:Verstappen still leads the way but Leclerc is really pressurising the Dutch man out front now he's in the DRS zone and claims the fastest lap so far. Sainz in P3 is already 3.8 seconds adrift of the front pair and he himself is coming under heavy pressure from Hamilton behind.

Lap 5: Russell hasn't taken too long to get Norris back and move up into P5. He uses the DRS down the long straight and dives infront of his good friend down the inside with ease.

Lap 3: Yellow flags in sector one and it's Magnussen who loses it mid-corner and hits the barrier with a thump. Thankfully he bounces off and can carry on for now though he's now last by a long distance.

LIGHTS OUT:We're underway here in Zandvoort and there's early drama as Hamilton makes contact with Sainz at the first corner but both are fine to carry on. Verstappen and Leclerc both get a clean getaway in front though Norris has jumped Russell up into P6.

2 mins to lights out: We're off for the formation lap and the flares are out again. 72 laps lay ahead, who's your pick for the win?

Time to go racing, folks! 😃#DutchGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/3f4k3kkN0p

— Formula 1 (@F1) September 4, 2022

15 minutes to lights out:Well, the atmosphere is absolutely electric here at Zandvoort as the crowd enjoy the pre-race show before the real business gets going.

As you can imagine, it's 99% people in orange t-shirts in the grandstands and they'll be expecting nothing less than a home win for Verstappen this afternoon.

— Formula 1 (@F1) September 4, 2022

30 minutes to lights out:The pit lane is open as the cars make their way to the start/finish line. A few changes overnight of note with Perez and Stroll both having work done on their power units after failures were discovered though there's no grid-place penalties.

Speaking of Hamilton before, Mercedes have nearly just had a nightmare as they leave some sort of sticker on his car which nearly gets stuck in the cars air intake. Thankfully for him and his team, it peels off and falls onto the track instead.

45 minutes to lights out:Well much will be made of the front three once again today but watch out for Lewis Hamilton who is starting out in P4 for the Dutch Grand Prix.

That's because yesterday, Mercedes team principle Toto Wolff stated that the British driver was a tenth up on Verstappen and Leclerc during his final flying lap before he had to pull out of it due to the yellow flags from the spin ahead involving Perez. If he shows that sort of pace during this afternoon's event, the former world champion could be right up there.
